A running toilet is usually the result of a broken or faulty valve/s (aka, flush valve or “tank” ball) in the bottom of the tank that needs to be replaced. The chain in your tank could be to blame as well. Both problems are easily fixed.A running toilet is usually caused by the valves, the rubber or plastic valve on the bottom of your tank, that fails to seal. Open the toilet tank and adjust the float arm to see if the water stops an inch below the overflow pipe.
This is called a “water hammer”. When water travelling quickly through a pipe has to stop ( when you close the valve) the force of the water shakes or vibrates any pipe not strapped securely. A mechanical water hammer arrestor installed on your distribution system will usually correct this. (Or don’t close the valve so quickly)
Plungers are incredibly simple yet effective tools. Take off your shower drain cover, place the plunger over the opening, push in and pull out repeatedly to create a suction. If it’s not staying put, add some petroleum jelly (Vaseline or similar) around the edges of the suction pad for a complete seal. Submerging it in water during this process will also help induce a suction effect. If this doesn’t work, it may be time to swap your plunger for a plumber.
